Just wondering if brass is soft enough to use for spalling as I can get one for half the price of copper?

I've used a heavy chunk of brass, and it works, but not as well as copper. It's really hard to beat a big diabase hammerstone for spalling IMO.

For spalling, I personally prefer a huge moose antler about 12 to 18 inches long. Bill

I took a 6lb splitting maul, cut off the wedge, and took it to cherry red in a forge, let it cool in a bucket of lime, welded on a short 4" pipe handle. No temper left and it, works well for field spalling.
