tanning a hog hide?
« on: November 24, 2010, 11:24:39 am »
Anyone ever tried to tan a feral hog hide?  I got one with a rifle yesterday and decided not to keep the hide due to the fat on the hide but my wife makes leather handbags in her free time so it might be something I could do for her...anyone tried tanning hog?

And having seen the thickness and weight of a hog hide I am a little worried about my plans to take one with my osage bow.  The one I got was close to 180lbs and I think if a bow shot is not placed REALLY well I would have a big problem on my hands.

Thanks, paulc

Hog hide makes great mocassins, it's thick. As I told you in the PM, just stick them good with a sharp arrow, they will fall dead, sooner or later. ;)

I have some moccasins made by Mark "Dakota Rooster" Roster that are buffalo hide with boar hide outsoles...I've walked thru halfmile wide patches of prickly pear with them and never worried where I was stepping!!!!  I've had these mocs for 7 years and they wear like iron, feel like silk!  Pity his hands got wrecked by arthritis and has stopped making them.

If you can get that hide tanned, I can see a lot of good use for it.
Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.
