paper backing finish

How do you finish a paper backed bow?
Can I just stain it and then rub in tru-oil?
How about marine varnish?

Just like any other backing. I used Tru-Oil and I very rarely dye or stain bows.

ive stained with some walnut stain then used tung oil, it turned out nice. im sure just about any normal finish will work over it. staining tends to make it look almost like fglass though, some dont like it or the painted look

not san expert as i have never used paper as a backing
but iwouldnt think the peper would pick up stain after it was glued on the bow
the glue should seal the paper to prevent stain from taking into the fibers
but i could be talking out of the back side
like i said im no expert on paper backing

It'll actually pick up stain/dye pretty heavily.  The pictures above show a backing that was dyed after it was glued on the bow.  Now, if you accidentally get any glue on the backside of the paper, that spot won't pick up stain/dye.

so the paper isnt saturated when its applied?
just glued on one side.

ive had glue soak through in spots where it was too thickly applied, it wont stain but it also doesnt look good if the rest of the backing is pristine.

Dye the paper before applying it!

I stained the paper back and then sealed with marine quality spar varnish. It came out great. I'll have to knock down the shine a bit with steel wool.

Crayola glue magic marker and a 26 year old hard body school teacher female of course would be a fine backing project.......
