advice for second bow,please

this is a quarter sawn white oak board that i have.i want to cut a piece out of it to start my second bow.i dont know if you can see the grain in the pic
but it makes a lazy arc from bottom left,to middle right then back to the left.it is 4/4 thick.if i were to cut a 1x2 out of this board,should i follow the grain
and try to straighten it,or just lay it out and cut it straight?

i would lay it out so tha there is minimal grain run off on the bow
i have made board bows from hick that loked like that
i just cut straight boards from the plank so i could get as many as possible
and always backed them boards with cotton fabric for added protection(i use a camo pattern cotton cloth  )

thanks fellers,since i was going to back my first few,or several,bows.i think i will straight cut some on one half,
then later follow the grain on the other half for one or two.i think the grain is straighter on the end away in the pic.
scott d,the board was sold to me as quarter sawn.i googled quarter and rift sawn lumber.seems it may be hard to tell on
some of the boards out of a tree,which it is.beats me,the most experience i have with wood is building a pressure treated pine
treehouse for my son about 15 years ago.

that looke like what most lumber yards around here sell as quarter sawn

i wouldnt be afraid to lay a straight bow profile on it.looks better than some of the red oak ive made into bows. you could also rip off a section of the straight grain and turn it 180 to use as a backing if there is enough thickness.

Ken , I build a lot of board bows, That looks pretty good to me. However I would back the outside cut and let the middle cut go for a non backed bow.I usally go with only one run off of the grain on a bow limb and hope it is near the handle or the tip. Linen or board back the edge boards. Good luck Denny
