White Oak, linen-backed Mollagabet
« on: March 22, 2010, 11:28:30 pm »
This bow is going to be 67" long.  I'm starting this thread as I'm sending the bow up to Ohio for my brother-in-law, Sean, and I'd like him to see how the progress goes.  I'll post more pictures and dimensions better as I go...

Here is the start.

Heya Destructo, It's a quarter-sawn board and that is the grain runoff.  That's why I was going to back it with cloth.
Do you think that it's still too many runoffs for it to turn out?
These white oak boards I'd been given and it has been giving me problems...
Wonder if I should just hold off with the wood and wait to go and pick up a hickory board or something for his project...
What do you think?

If them are all Runoff's...I think I would at least Back it with Hickory...with my Quartersawn Wood for my paddle Bows...I try to keep my Runoff's to a max of 2-3 per bow...any more than that...I back them with Hickory or Rawhide...I don't trust Cloth....but that just Me........

...and with a Mollagabet bow you have such shorter working portions of your limbs it is REALLY going to put a strain on those run offs... more so than with a regular 67" bendy handle bow.  I would definitely back it with some really thin hickory.   :)

I think I'm with ya'll on this.  My gut is telling me the same.  Gotta make a trip up to the hardwood store.
