...ive made them with tile files, hacksaw blades, sandpaper, but when i think of "primitive" i think of bare minimum tools.

that does look fairly simple, but my biggest concern would be the arrow slipping from the string at full draw (or partial draw for that matter)

of course I tend to over-engineer most things I do.........

That is simple, but I try to cut all mine just above the node.

I've wondered about that. Seems it's acceptable(?) both ways.
Some want a node near the head too.
Wonder if there's pros/ cons.
But don't want to hi-jack a thread on it.

...i do leave the node on sometimes and cut above it on the nock end...ONLY when there is enough suitable boo there to form a good nock.
sometimes when i get bamboo the shaft gets real thin at the nock end and the growth beyond the last node at the nock end of the shaft gets too thin and oblong.
even when i leave the node on, i still wrap it.
i personally like leaving the node on when i can as it leaves a nice bulbous place to pull the arrow back on the bowstring.
...this is just ONE way of hundreds to make nocks, i was just showing a simple method of doing so.
not all my arrows look the same, it would be nice! but each one has its own flight personality and some need a heavier tip to fly well or more feather ,less feather, longer, shorter etc.
as long as they seem to fly where i want them to fly i guess thats ok with me ;D

A friend, Barry McCall, uses the same type nock on his primitive arrows but also makes a primitive field point. He cuts the forward end at a steep angle about 3" to4" below a node. He then tempers the point over a flame, fills the center hole with sand and seals it with pitch glue. Makes a good point for 3D shooting. The sand adds the weight. He shot a full 20 target round with one of these arrows hitting trees, rocks and an occasional target  ::). The arrow survived.
