Were atatl darts 2 fletch too?
« on: November 05, 2009, 10:04:00 am »
Hey guys,
I was wondering if there has ever been any atlatl darts found with the two fletch design.
I know only a few specimans have been found and they were out west i think. ive seen those and they were the 3 fletch.
Has anyone ever heard of a eastern atlatl dart that exists with the 2 fletch design?

From Square shooter. I haven't seen a two fletched atlatl, but the spear I made has two, compared to three
Fletches. Manards sells or used to sell a rod with a ball on top, made of aprox 3/4" steel tube.
It has a base made of a tube with four fins, designed, I suspect, to be driven into the ground. Now when I saw the base, I thought "spear trade head !¡" Sharpening each fin and mounting on a specially
painted up hickory sapling with feather fletching builds a spear to use with an atlatl.

I don't know for sure, not many atlatl darts found, especially in the humid Southeast. I would suspect that they were fletched in different styles, like arrows. The two-fletched style of arrow was prevelant over a wide chunk of the continent, so it must have been pretty old in origin. I fletch most of my atlatl darts with a two-fletch.

Progress might have been all right once but it's gone on for far too long.

Ok but nobody knows of an existing atlatl dart that has 2 fletch?
It would stand to reason that this type of fletch would be handed down from the atlatl dart if the 2 fletch style is that old.
Hmmmm just curious.

here are some of mine and i sometimes just use a single feather tied on!
try it...as all you need is something slowing the rear of the dart down so it does not surpass the tip!
