Had a chance to meet Aelerik yesterday.
Got him paired up with a decent stave from the Osage trees George and Cipriano and I fell back
on the July 4th weekend. The wood was down to 11%, still needs a bit of drying but pretty darn close considering its short life as a stave.
 
Got him lined out on chasing some rings and turned him loose...

Aelerik is a Very Nice, well mannered young man.
Eager to learn and ready to make wood shavings.
He is welcome any time.

As I am not a bowyer as of yet, I just stuck to the basics.

I'm located up on the West Side of Houston.
Usually up for making shavings week day evenings or weekends.

How far have you gotten into the art of bow building?

    Well I haven't got to far yet just finishing up my first
 its a molly style that I am making from a pine 1x4 .
I have a elm stave roughed out but it still needs a lil more time
But so far I enjoy it.

I hear ya Bo.

Man, a pine molly... That sounds like a tough design for a pine bow.
Do you have it shooting?

Not to far along yet myself.
Have one Osage bow shooting but not finished.
Two more Osage bows ready to tiller, mostly.
A Pecan sapling Longbow that is getting close to tillering.

Been spending a lot of time gathering materials and building tools for use in bow making.
Along with trying to learn to knapp and build arrows.

Its getting close I did actually shoot it today but its not really ready
It has a crack in the back so I backed it with a cotton shirt
It helped some but it still needs some tillering one limb is still
a lil stiff.  My next attempt is gonna be a elm stave I have roughed out
and curing.may attempt another board bow in a pyramid style.

Yes Sir Bo,

Sorry you lost your Pine Molly.

From what I have read, pine can be made into a bow.
But you have to go Very Long, Very Wide, and Very Light in draw weight.

If you are board bow building I would recommend an Oak board.
Or Hickory/Pecan if you have access to it.

I've also read that the Molly design is a tougher to tiller owing to the flat uniform cross section of the bending sections of your limbs.

Have you considered a longbow or flatbow design?

Hello Bo,

I hear ya.

Pecan will definitely do you better than Pine, hands down.
From the advice that I've seen on PA along with TTBB and other sources, Pecan works well when you keep your limb width at least two inches from the fades out to about mid limb then start your taper out to half inch tips.

I'm in the process of tillering a Pecan Sapling bow that is a bit more narrow at about an inch and a half out to mid limb, tapering to a half inch at the tips. But I made this bow Long at about seventy three inches n-t-n. Its holding together so far, but we'll see.  ;)

    im gonna start on my elm and i also have a mesquite board im
working out plans for lucky for me my dad mills his own lumber and gets some good contacs on trees
so i can get pretty descent bow makings.  i would really like to get hold of some bois d'arc or as they call it elsewhere osage .

The PA office is in Houston.. did you all know that?  It used to be right by you Gus just off of the Toll Way.
It has moved but isn't too far from that.  If you all get a shoot together you should let us know.   :D

Bo,  it does sound like you have a good wood connection going on.
Still trying to do a bit of wood networking locally myself.

Would be happy to pass an Osage stave your way.
But be warned all of my unworked Osage staves were cut in the past three to four months.
