Got a question on a laminated bow.
« on: November 06, 2009, 11:01:54 am »
Hey all. I am getting ready to start another bow and was hoping maybe someone could tell me if I am way off base on my methodology. I am going to make a R/D out of red oak (I have a ton around here) and my thought process was as follows:

1. Machine 1/8" thick strips of red oak. Maybe 2-3 pieces
2. taper at least the inside piece at the nock ends.
3. Glue and clamp with epoxy, etc.
4. Back with maple or some other wood.

My question is is there a better way? Am I creating more work by making all of the thin strips than is necessary?
How many would I need to get into a 55-60# range if I make the bow 64-66 inches nock to nock....

Thanks all.

I'd say that for a red oak r/d back with hickory it would be easier to just but use a 9/16 slat and put a little shape in it first with heat then more in the clamp up.

Thanks guys. I'll check out the build along. I may be able to get some hickory, but I don't have any currently. I think a friend of mine has a hickory log that is about 12 years old....Wonder if he would miss it  >:D
