newbie needs some help please
« on: December 02, 2009, 09:10:16 am »
This is a bunch of what I hope is flint that I picked up along the Neosha River in Council Grove, KS over the holiday.  How much of this might be usable to make a couple of points?  Is the small stuff only good for practice?  I tried using a screwdriver as a pressure tool to get some flakes off but not much happened.  Of course I know zip about knapping so any advice would be greatly appreciated.  TIA, PaulC

What about the size leapingbare?  Or anyone else?  Are those pieces large enough to get a point out of them?  TIA

most of the small stuff will be a challenge to say the most experienced knapper but can be done...I suggest going to youtube and watching" knapping the impossible" has 2 parts...killer video on knapping smaller challenging pieces..gut

if your new to knapping
dont throw out the small pieces
they are good to practice on if nothing else
being new your going to waste more rock trying to make points than you will
actually get points from
ive been knapping less than a year and still keep small chunks of rock
for those days when i cant seem to do anything right, then i grab a small chunk
and start to whacking if for no other reason to just try nd figure out what i am doing wrong
like i said they are great for practicing on, sometimes i get a nice point from one of my bad day chunks too
i always wanted a harley, untill it became the "thing to ride"
i ride because i love to,not to be part of the crowd
