I would back it just to be safe. Just had a Red Oak break today, the backing prevented it from going into the ceiling.

Backing is pretty cheap, lots cheaper than stitches or drywall work, or a living room window.....

my first home depot red oak bow doesnt have a backing and ive been using it for about a year now, straight grain and late growth rings is a good thing, if u got a board with the grains going off the the side, silk is good enough

jeff02, I assume the board was straight grained. I back it after long string tillering and before I string it with the short string. Your stave is getting whippy on you which means the area from mid limb out (about 10 inches from the tips) is beginning to bend too much. I would leave that area alone and make sure the bend is starting at the end of the fades and continuing out in a nice even arc. There are buildalongs on my site and plenty of pictures of bows on this site. Go to BOM and check them out particularly the winners. The more pictures you see the better. Have fun.
