It's great material and very available.

Neolithics has plenty.

The white (porcelain) is finest in grain, and the colored is the grainiest. Novaculite is a fine-grained quartzite more or less. Knappers cook it to make it more glassy and uniform.

The black stuff is hardest to find and the waste with that formation is the greatest.

Great material, really good for beginning knappers. Make sure it is heat treated before you whack it though. ;)

Novaculite comes in an incredible variety of colors and is probably the easiest stone to knap once it has been heat treated.   Great for either beginners or pros.  I get most of my novaculite from Dan's Whetstone.

Heated novaculite knaps like butter, raw novaculite knaps like granite. It's good stuff, and comes in some cool colors.
