HHB Back

Question on HopHornBeam bow. since the back is peeled i know i don't need to chase a ring but the back has the very small ridges running along the length. should i scrape the back smooth or leave the ridges on? thanks, Dan.

I my experience I left the ridges there. I just scraped off the bark and there was the back.

leave them alone....they will not hurt a Thing....and they add Character too....and by cutting through them...you are in all intent.,...violating the Back of the Bow

Leave the back alone after the bark is peeled. The ridges is what make HHB so cool as a bow. Also, it will act as camo by reflection the light differently on the ridges and the valleys.

Dan,it's all in what you want.If you want to scrape it smooth,you can back it with silk.If you don't want to back it,leave the back as it is. God Bless

ya i would just leave the back alone,like they said if you scrape it smooth your violating the back and will need to back it.
i know you can make a sweet bow from it,just be patient and keep coming back and asking questions,and please dont forget those
ever important PICTURES,we love pics.plus they are a great benefit for getting the proper advise.

I'm with Pat-I like the character of the valleys in HHB. It can be tough getting the cambium out of them, but it looks cool.

...and I'll be the devils advocate here  ;D and say if you harvest in spring after the leaves come out, you peel the bark off and you don't have the problems trying to get the cambium off. ;)

Dats Da Ticket....nice and wet with the fisrt Sap....what doesnt peel off clean then....will most likely all come off as you tiller it...sometimes you may have to scotch brite pad some....but I leave it be....I like the looks of it in the crevices.....JMO

Thanks guys, that all i need to know, the back stays just as it is. Now what is the best way to completly remove pencile marks? eraser doesn't seem to get them all off. thanks, Dan.
