No mullet, those notches were done with a horseshoe nail flaking tool. and I just used regular pressure to make them. After a few flake removals, the edge of the nail got dull and instead of gripping the edge inside the notch, it would slip, crushing the edge and dulling it. That's a dangerous situation to be caught in because if you continue to use a dull tool it will require too much pressure to release the next flake. When the flake finally does come off, it is so massive that it will wrap around and rip the entire ear off. Instead of trying to push it, I instead re-dressed the nail with a file and it gripped the dull edge inside the notch. I was able to take smaller flakes off and make those notches without blowing the ears off. I learned something today...I need to redress my horse shoe nail several times when making those notches. Until today, I never re-dressed my tool while I was notching, and because of that I had problems blowing the ears off when the edge got crushed inside the notch. So for all you knappers, keep your tools in tip-top shape at all times, and you'll have better results!
