Thanks Greg,

If I come Friday what time does the challenge begin?  I have to tote my little trailer from middle S.C. (near Camden).  Might need to head out on Thursday.

Will look at the site where you suggested...got my first Primitive Archer mag and that is how I found out about the Classic and the website.  Building a selfbow is on my "Bucket list".

Thanks again,

Rand

well i think i am going to be able to make it over, barring work conflicts and can't tell you how excited i am. hopefully will have my elm stave shooting by then but would like to enter the selfbow challenge.  i generally do well with self teaching, but would love to get some hands on help. i really want to have hunting capable bow for next deer season. i read this site like religiously and have gotten infinite amounts of help from both it and the magazine. am looking forward to meeting some of the people that i read on hear and thank them personally. there is what seems to me a great sense of community and family amongst the folks on here and it really has been exactly what i am looking for. so be ready this long haired country boy is ready to let the shavings fly. also hope to get m hands on some Osage while there. ;D

Think I can buy a stave there and have it shipped back to WA?

Hi,

1.  If you are coming from SC up on I-40 is the Classic in/near Clarksville?   The directions have me a little confused:

 Directions:
From Nashville: Take I-24 West towards Clarksville.  Exit on to Maxey Road (Exit 19).  Left to end of Maxey Road.  Right on to 41-A North.  ~5 miles, Left on to Oak Plains Road.  Watch for Twin Oaks signs.  Left on to Knox Road.  Right on to Ashley Road.  For those of you with a GPS, use 37.770520, -81.306940.

2.  Also I noticed the self bow challenge starts on Thursday...but I didn't see a time??

Thanks for any thoughts on this...just want to make sure I actually get there and on the day and time I should actually show up!!

Rand, the challenge goes all weekend. When you get there and set up your camp, get settled in, grab your tools and stave and the challenge has started for you. ;) There is no shotgun start just start when you can. There will be some folks that won't start until Saturday.  ;)

Rand, like Pat said...we're probably not going to be paying much attention to a start time this year. We don't want to put pressure on folks to get finished if they don't feel comfortable being in a hurry. If folks show up early Monday/Tuesday prior (or the weekend before) and want to get started on a bow on their own, that's fine. There may not be as much tutoring help earlier in the week prior to the actual weekend event. Like Pappy has said, some folks actually have arrived in past years the weekend prior.

How does this sound for starting the Self Bow Challenge...from as unworked as a split stave, to a roughed in bow WITHOUT string notches cut in it yet...starting as early as sunrise Thursday morning and no later start then 10am Saturday morning. Any working on a bow prior to Thursday morning is fine, just stopping short of cutting the string notches. Hopefully folks will understand that the Self Bow Challenge is for fun and learning, not a real competitive event. Basically you shoot the course with your new bow and the top score win's the Challenge. If you don't get your bow finished...hopefully you've still had fun and learned some new bow building skills! ;)

If you wait until Saturday morning and have limited experience, you probably won't get the bow shooting before the weekend is up. We would give you directions on what to do to finish it. We usually have a few bows that break during the making process each year. With new people trying to make a bow, that's to be expected. I don't think there are many bowyer's on this site that haven't broken a bow during building before...just learn from it. ;)

Looks like a lot of chatter, what Greg said on the challenge,it is fun and if you work at it you can make the challenge. :) Put up a new napping tent this weekend hope it will be enough room
for now.10x20. Added to what we already had,Jesse can shovel out the scraps when we are
done. ;) ;D ;D

Pappy, GregB:

Just want to let you know that I (( CAN NOT )) get the Johnstone for the knapping contest.
At least not from my dad.
It turns out that the potty that my dad had taken out is some kind of antique.
The plummer that re-plumbed his house gave him $500.00 for it.
